the girl in the mirror

She looked into the mirror and smiled.
But the girl inside just stared back blankly.

She smiled harder.
The corners of her mouth rose upwards in an awkward manner.
She was almost cringing.
The girl inside remained emotionless.
Her eyes were hollow.
Empty.

Why are you doing this to me?
She thought.
She was getting desperate.
Her heart pumped loudly against her ribcage.
Anger rose within her; Boiling. Like magma.
Furious.

She clenched her fist so hard her knuckles turned white.
And gave the girl inside a taste of her own medicine.
But the girl inside didn't retaliate. She didn't even flinch.
She just looked on expressionlessly. Observing. Wondering. Mocking?

The glass broke into zillions of tiny smitherens.
Shining like the stars above.
With trembling hands, she picked up a piece.

This time, the girl inside looked different.
Her face was distorted.
She looked horrific.
But her eyes remained cold.

Why won't you go away? Please... go away.

Her palm closed tightly upon the glass, as if squeezing the last breath out of the girl.
Her vision blurred as tears welled up in her eyes.
Her palm felt nauseatingly sticky.
Looking down, she realised the girl had indeed disappeared amongst the sea of red.

It took her a moment to feel the pain searing through her heart,
Coursing through her veins.
Tearing her apart.
She looked down once more.
Her face twisted in horror to see the accusatory stares from the very same girl.
Only this time, there was not one. But zillions of them.

Slowly, their mouths moved. In unison.
Where they saying something? What were they saying?
She can't hear a thing.
The silence was deafening.

She stumbled back. Grasping for support.
But she couldn't tear her eyes away from the girl inside.
The girls inside stared back like they always do. Their mouths moving at a growing speed.
There was a rhythm to it.
It was hypnotising.
She was struggling to decipher their message.

It was just a tiny glimpse.
Of the split second of pain reflected in the eyes of the girl
Before she felt the floor rising up to meet her.
